Awhile back, I wrote a lengthy treatise on food at LARPs. This is a bit more practical, and I'm providing our go-to LARP food: pho. It's easy, convenient, tasty, and light. The recipe is after the jump; however, if you or loved ones have favorite recipes, please submit them! Either in comments or to collabnarration@gmail.com. I'd love to have a rotating recipe post feature.

LARP food dilemmas can make even the most raucous adventures tiresome. As I celiac, I have a food allergy that negates most easy-access foods (sadly, a grilled cheese sandwich would pretty much kill me). Moreover, neither my teammates nor I particularly like heavy and rich foods-- we feel too weighed down when we eat them during LARPs. To add to out first-world LARP problems, I'm not a frequent meat eater and we have many LARP teammates who are strict vegetarians, yet one team member avoids veggies like it's his job. For those reasons, it's been a bit of trial-and-error trying to figure out what works best for us at a LARP. To fight evil by moonlight and win love by daylight, Sailor Sc-- I mean adventurers need protein and carbs, minimally. Chris could go for the bread-and-cheese route, and I could do my usual GF thing, but it's kind of lame in LARPland. Making separate meals is expensive, and, I think, kills the communal/team feel that makes a LARP a LARP. Happily, we finally figured out something that works! Vegetarian Pho-- chicken optional. It really is the perfect LARP food: cheap, quick, easy to pack, healthy, and sustaining. So what do you need?
The cooking and prep-work can be done, literally, minutes before you leave the house for the event.
In a Freezer Bag pack:
1) Vegetarian Pho Starter Broth (you can make your own, but Pacific Foods offers a really good one)/ 1 box is usually good for 2 people
2) 1 tupperware container with shredded and cooked boneless, skinless chicken breast (usually 1-2 lbs for the weekend feeds 2 people) and/or tofu. (Or protein of your choice, really-- traditionalists would go for beef.)
3) 1 tupperware container of precooked vermicelli rice noodles (1 package)
4) Ziploc baggies with: slivered ginger, sliced cucumber, chopped green onion, fresh basil and cilantro, lime wedges
5) Condiments: Hoisin sauce (GF for Celiacs) and Sriracha sauce. Can't forget the cock sauce.
6) Bean sprouts!
Also bring:
- an electric kettle
- bowls, spoons, chopsticks
When food time comes, it really couldn't be simpler: pour the desired amount of broth into your kettle, and, as it's heating, layer your bowls with noodles, protein, herbs and vegetables, and condiments. Pour the hot broth over the noodles et al, and enjoy! We fed ourselves and a few extra adventurers-- everybody seemed satisfied.
Since most teams have mastered their preferred methods of LARP-eating, we are happy to finally have ours.
A crash course in all things pho.
