Happy New Year!

Well, I'm actually a bit late with this, but Happy New Year nonetheless. I wanted to do a post specifically about the next year of larping: last year was a busy year that was punctuated by the endings and openings of various games. Now, in 2014, things have started to settle into place. So, what are you most excited about in the coming year? What sort of games do you want to try, and what games are you enthusiastic to continue? Are you instituting any major changes in your play? My answers, to get the ball rolling, follow:

  • I have a few plots that are very near and dear to my creative core. Some of their big narrative arcs are going to get going this year, and I'm excited to see in what directions players take my plot children.
  • A team of close friends and I started playing Ascendant-- not only do I love the world, but the community is really different from my (much beloved) New England one. The change of pace, and the new (to me) faces, are refreshing and add a new dynamic to my gameplay. (Also, I have discovered that eight hour road trips, with the right company, are not only bearable, but fun.)
  • I've been getting into a lot more creative writing lately-- though I mostly write for myself, game-based writing has been a welcome re-entry into storytelling.
  • I have some super secrets in the works, but, for now, they are super secrets. Nevertheless, I'll vaguely hint at them here.

  1. I am looking forward to Mirror Mirror and Madrigal.

Definitely to Mirror Mirror - very bummed they only have 3 events scheduled so far. I need to work with the other morally flexible people to make sure certain things don't happen. In one case, I want to do it without people finding out it was even necessary, because while I'm saving their asses, they don't need to know *how* I'm doing it. In the other case I need to do it without other people finding out because its contrary to something they started doing a while back (which was stupid) but was then abandoned. And I need to keep my hands in all the pies - which is harder in a larger game because more people means no one is *required* to work together, so they get more petty and exclusive. I wish I had another event to help work on this! This is a lot more intrigue/nuanced (and, well, shady) than my past RP characters have ever been. Plus I'm front lining in MM, which is not what my previous PC combat model has been either.

  2. I'm looking forward to all the non-Accelerant games we'll be attending. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Accelerant Cheerleader, but there are a ton of "other" games out there in New England which I'm dying to hit up. Dystopia Rising, Second Dawn, Steam and Cinders2, MASI, CRO, Magestry, Heroic Realms, Terres Rising, Prophets Fall...our community has grown substantially and I'm interested to see what else is "out there."

    1. Once I'm in research mode, rather than teacher mode, I fully plan to explore stuff outside of Accelerant and NERO (probably starting with MASI). Chris, from a single adventure weekend, brought back ideas to implement in our games. It's good to get out of the familiar headspace every so often.
